There’s a new subscription box! But what’s Books + Beer all about? And why are we working with CALM?
Today – October 10th – marks World Mental Health Day. Yes, we’ll be the first to agree that there’s perhaps no need for specific days to celebrate anything and everything from socks to sandwiches, but mental health is important, and taking a day to raise awareness is an essential initiative. So we’re taking the opportunity to tell you a little more about Books + Beer and why we’re working with male mental health charity, CALM.
Can you guess the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK? Shockingly it’s something completely preventable: suicide. CALM’s essential work includes challenging a culture that prevents men seeking help when they need, and offering support to men who are feeling down, depressed, anxious or in crisis. 75% of all UK suicides are male – so it’s very likely you know of someone who’s been affected.
We’ve chosen to work with CALM specifically because we feel it’s important to recognise the importance of taking time to switch off and slow down your phone off, leave behind the scroll-swipe-like and simply relax with a book. Why is it exactly that self-care seems to be for women only? If you’re a man, why is there such a stigma around self-care, whether that’s activities like yoga and meditation, or something as simple as having a long, relaxing bath or sitting down with a book? Books + Beer aims to provide a monthly prompt to slow down, providing a relaxed night in, in a box – the perfect chilled-out moment to sit down and enjoy the simple pleasure of reading.
How does it work? Books + Beer members select their preferred genre – non-fiction (self-development, business, popular science, society & politics) or high-quality crime – and receive a recently-published paperback, along with two craft beers each month. Ready to broaden your mind with brilliant books and a couple of the finest craft beers?
And the books? “Expect titles to make you think, ensure you learn something new and expand your mind. We always ensure that our books are recently published, meaning that it’s very unlikely you’ll receive something you’ve already read – unless you live in a bookshop.” Our books are selected by a well-read team – and always in paperback, meaning that they’re practical for reading on the go. Or on the sofa…
As for those craft beers? Each box features two interesting cans or bottles, from pioneering, up-and-coming breweries. We’ll choose brews to suit most palates – and also include tasting notes and recipe suggestions plus a curated soundtrack, so you’ve got all you need to relax and switch off.
Via our partnership with CALM, each box purchased results in a 50p donation to the charity – to help with their vital, vital work. So today, we’ll be inviting YOU to raise awareness of mental health AND giving you the chance to win a Books + Beer box for yourself and a friend. How to take part? Follow or like Reading in Heels and Books + Beer on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – like the photo post and tag a friend in the comments – and retweet/share the post. The competition closes Thursday 12th October at midnight.
